Sunday Evening Science

I learned today that if you eat lettuce and tomatoes for lunch, and throw up 7 hours later, the lettuce is going to still be green, and the tomatoes red. Everything else you eat turns into a greyish mass. Thank you, Tyler, for teaching me this important bit of knowledge about digestion today...

Woohoo!!!

So I went shopping yesterday because I needed some new jeans. Why? Because my other jeans were getting to be TOO BIG! :D

Kid Soccer is hilarious

So we signed up Tyler for soccer for the first time this Spring. I finally made it to one of his games yesterday, and I couldn't stop laughing. You see this pile of 5 and 6 year olds, all trying to kick the ball, and half of them don't really know what they're doing. I think the rule is if you get the ball, you run after it as fast as you can and try to score a goal. Frequently, the ball gets rolling so fast the kids can't keep up with it and start tumbling over. It's funny to watch their reactions to scoring a goal, too. The boys often start dancing around and giving each other high fives, while the girls tend to just have this bored "I'm only here cause my mom signed me up" look on their faces. Needless to say, I think I'll make an effort to try and go more often. It's great entertainment! :D

I was just browsing...

...through my blog, going back to when I first started writing. As I read through October, I noticed a post about Belen (my friend's daughter who nearly died). It was written after the surgery to put in her feeding tube and her trach. I had asked my friend about the prognosis for Belen, and at the time all they were hoping for was that she would be able to hold her head up by herself, and smile. This was 6 months ago. Miracles have happened in those past 6 months. For one, little Belen is still with us. I think many people (doctors) had doubts she'd ever make it through the winter. But she did, she's such a fighter. To read her prognosis back in October, and to see her now, it's just plain amazing to think about all that has happened. Belen can sit by herself now (though still a little wobbly, but so are all babies when they first start sitting). She not only smiles, but laughs. She responds to people, and loves being held and talked to. She loves to bounce, and is even starting to support some weight on her legs on her own. She has a cap on her trach a lot of the time now, and has a sleep study scheduled for June 1st. If all goes well, she'll get her trach out after that. Brain surgery is scheduled for May 1st. They are planning to remove the malformation (fistula) on her brain, and afterwards there won't be any more worries about brainbleeds. My friend is also hopeful that she may even get her feeding tube out by the end of the year. I still tear up sometimes, thinking back to that day in October when Belen stopped breathing. Seeing her little lifeless body being carried to the ambulance just broke my heart. It's something I don't think I'll ever forget. We didn't know whether she was going to live or die. Of course, things could still take a turn for the worse. Brain surgery is no walk in the park. And as long as she has the trach, she's still very susceptible to infections that could take her life. But there's hope, more than ever. And little Belen has proven to be a fighter. :o)

Purple potatoes

The natural foods store where I get most of my produce carries purple potatoes. I thought I'd get some just for fun. They're actually really good. Not very starchy, so they're perfect for a potato salad. Here's a picture. :p

POLL

For those of you who read my blog, please respond. :o)

Where oh where has my memory gone???

I usually make a shopping list before I go to the store. Well, today I wanted to get just 5 things, so I figured I wouldn't need a list. Dropped Tyler off at school, then went to the store. Bought my 3 things and went on my way. Now, an hour after getting home, I remembered 2 more things I wanted to buy but didn't. I had totally forgotten! So sad... Maybe I should start doing more crossword puzzles or something, to get my memory back up to speed. :p

Here's a couple of pictures of Kaylee today, just thought they were cute.

Give me the camera, mom!!!

Pretty please???

For Leia

Here's the before and after pictures for Kaylee's haircut. :o)

Before. Notice the hair in her eyes, and the longer strands on the side by her ear that just kind of stick out.

I trimmed it in the front, around the side, and in the back, mostly just to get an even length and to get it out of her eyes. She had long strands of hair over her ears that I trimmed, and then a couple of long strands on the back of her head that just always looked messy. So I trimmed those, too, and it's all an even length now. Still long enough on the top to make pigtails, so it's all good. And hopefully it'll grow more evenly. :o)

And never mind the pj's, that's what you get when you have two older brothers. :p

It's one of those days...

...where you have to go lock yourself in the bathroom if you want just a couple of minutes of peace and quiet. Wonder if Kaylee is teething again??? She sure has been clingy today, permanently attached at the hip. Thank goodness for slings... :p

Random Ramblings

  • I planted flowers in my flower box yesterday.
  • I also planted two strawberry plants in my other flower box.
  • A dead wasp came back to life in our garbage can.
  • Kaylee has the special talent of waking up for some nursies right when I sit down to do something (like write in my blog right now...).
  • The dishwasher is running for the second time today, and there are still a few dishes out on the table that didn't fit.
  • I can type and nurse Kaylee at the same time. :p
  • I'm going to go sit in my big chair now, and hopefully get a foot massage. :o)

Finger Painting

Tyler and Bryan got some finger paint from the Easter Bunny. Fun!

Kaylee likes it, too.

Happy Easter!

The kids got their Easter Baskets this morning, and we had a little Easter Egg hunt. It was fun! Tyler was so excited that the Easter Bunny found the little chocolate egg that Tyler hid for him last night. Cute kids. :o)

Kaylee's first haircut

Yes, I did it. I cut Kaylee's hair today, for the first time. It was getting so long that it was constantly getting in her eyes, and it drove me crazy. It also was quite long on the sides, but short in the back. So it really just always looked messy. The only way to make it look nice was to put pigtails in her hair, but I didn't want to do that too often because her hair is so fine. Today, I decided the boys needed haircuts, and while I was at it, I decided to give Kaylee a trim, too. Of course, she turned her head this way and that, and it was a challenge to get her to sit still long enough to give a halfway decent cut. But I think it turned out nicely overall. At least it's more even now, not long in some places and short in others. And her hair isn't in her eyes anymore. I'm hoping it's still long enough on the top to put pigtails in, we'll see. I'm hoping I won't have to cut it again for a few more months, though. She's just too wiggly. Boys are easier that way, you just take the buzzer and buzz everything the same length. Now that they're older, they get "real" haircuts, with the sides shorter than the top and all, but they're also old enough to sit still. :p

Today is one of those days...

...I'm really excited that we're going to Germany soon. Six more weeks!!!

I love my Mei Tai!

Recently, I added a Mei Tai to my sling collection. And I love it! I can put Kaylee in the front carry at church, when she's tired and needs a nap. It helps her settle down and sleep, and it's comfortable for me, too. I can also carry her on my back with it, which I LOVE! It makes shopping so much easier. Kaylee hates to sit in the shopping carts, she always tries to stand up in them (which is not safe...). If I let her out, she goes crazy running around and emptying off shelves... So I put her on my back, which she loves, and everyone is happy. In fact, yesterday she fell asleep while I was doing my grocery shopping. Makes going out and getting things done so much easier! :o) The other thing I love about the sling is that it folds up really small and fits nicely into the diaper bag. Yay! Oh, and let's not forget about trying to get dinner made with a toddler hanging on your leg. Kaylee has a special talent for wanting to be held as soon as mom goes into the kitchen. With her on my back, I can get dinner made without having to try and entertain a screaming toddler the whole time... :p

Ugh, I hate being sick...

I've been fighting a cold all week. It really got me good. Stuffy nose, and now I have this annoying cough, too. Yuck. My nose is all raw from having to blow it all the time. I just want to be healthy again! Dave, Kaylee and Tyler have it, too. Bryan, the one who never eats any fruits or vegetables, is healthy. Go figure...

Surgery's off

Well, since little Belen had a cold over the weekend, the surgery is off for now. I guess they want to wait at least 10 days for her to fully recover, and then the surgeon is going out of town. So the new date is May 1st. I hope that's going to work out for her. What an emotional rollercoaster...

As for me, I got the same cold over the weekend. I'm slowly getting over it, but it sure knocked me out for a couple of days. I hate being sick. Blah... I'm also trying to get Kaylee down to one nap a day. I've noticed she naps much better (2-2.5 hours) with only one nap, whereas with two she'll only nap 45 minutes or so at a time. She's getting cranky, though, so I may have to put her down for two today. I hate those transition times...

She's back home

Thank goodness. They just ran a bunch of tests on little Belen, to see what kind of infection she's fighting. She stabilized enough that they sent her back home last night. Hopefully she'll get over whatever it is quickly, so she can still be on for surgery on Wednesday.
